Allow Over Picking for Sales Orders - Warehouse Shipments & Picks

My company recently switched over to Advanced Warehousing in Business Central D365 - We are using warehouse receipts, put-aways, shipments and picks. We have contracts with our customers that allow us to over deliver on certain items. For example, if they order 29 Boxes of Product A, and 30 makes a pallet, we are able to over deliver by 1 box. Before the implementation of Advanced Warehousing, we could simply reopen the sales order, change the Quantity and release it. But now, we are having our team pick these items using handheld scanners. I am wondering if anyone has had success allowing for over picking using advanced warehousing? Whether it was a custom/existing extension, or a good work around.

We are wanting to have as little interruptions in the pick process as possible. Ideally, the picker would have an order for 29 boxes where the pick states 29 in the take and place, but if they enter 30 to take and place, they are able to do so without any errors. Currently, they are reaching out to our Customer Service team and having them add a new line, then using the "Get Source Document" in the warehouse shipment, and then creating a brand new pick, all for one box. This is not uncommon in our world at all, it's something we deal with on a fairly regular basis.

Please, if you need any further information to aid in your answering my question, let me know.

Advanced Warehousing in BC doesn’t support over-picking by default. You’ll need customization or an extension to allow pickers to enter extra quantities without errors. Otherwise, adjusting the sales order before picking is required.

Yun, thank you for your response. I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean when you say modify the number of existing lines, do you mean modify the line number itself?

    Thanks,

Would this be a problem if you didn't add new sales lines but instead modified the number of existing lines?

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am working on a extension that will apply a buffer tolerance for over picking based on a boolean field in the item card. The issue with this is that if I inflate the Sales Order line quantity to allow for an over pick tolerance, if we do not fully pick based on the buffer, Business Central sees the "left over" quantities as back orders. Any ideas or knowledge on how to get around this?

    Thanks in advance!

Allow Over Picking for Sales Orders - Warehouse Shipments & Picks
    Hello,

In Business Central D365 with Advanced Warehousing, standard functionality does not support over-picking directly on warehouse picks - it enforces the exact quantity from the source document. To allow over-picking (e.g., picking 30 instead of 29 boxes), a customization is typically required. Some companies implement logic to permit slight overages within a tolerance range on picks, updating the sales order and inventory accordingly in the background to avoid manual steps. This reduces interruption for warehouse staff. Microsoft does not provide this natively, so a lightweight customization is often the most efficient solution for regular over-delivery scenarios like yours.

Hope this answer will help you!

We have Over Receipt as out of the box functionality but for Over picking you have to alter the code or change the original quantity and re execute the pick operation.

Hi, currently, BC's Over-Receipt features only have the following two. If you have other requirements, this needs to be customized.
Dynamics 365 Business Central: Receive more items than ordered (Receive a quantity higher than the ordered quantity)
Business Central 2023 wave 2 (BC23): Receive more items than ordered by using inventory put-away documents

Or you can submit it to Microsoft.

    Dear Flynn.Fr,

This is a common business requirement when dealing with full pallet scenarios. Here’s my take on handling your over-delivery needs:

    1. Warehouse Item Override Extension
The most elegant solution would be to create a custom extension that allows configurable over-delivery tolerances per item or customer. This would involve:
    • Setting up over-delivery percentage/quantity tolerances at the item or customer level.
    • Extending the warehouse pick functionality to allow quantities within the tolerance range.
    • Automatically adjusting the source sales order when the pick is registered.

    2. Modified Pick Line Handling
A simpler alternative approach could be:
    • Set up Shipping Advice as Allow More for relevant customers.
    • Modify warehouse pick lines to include an Allow Qty Override field.
    • When quantity override is allowed, the scanner can accept higher quantities within predefined limits.

    3. Process Optimization Workaround
Until a technical solution is implemented, here’s a more efficient process than your current workflow:
    • Preemptively add the potential extra quantity as a separate line with quantity 0.
    • Set up the warehouse pick to include this line.
    • Pickers can enter the extra quantity on this line if needed.
    • If not needed, the 0-quantity line will be automatically removed during posting.
